Batesburg-Leesville cross country runner Katie Covington has had an amazing start to her Panther varsity XC career.

Only a 7th-grader, Covington participated in her first-ever race last Tuesday in a meet hosted by Ninety Six High School and finished the 5K course in a respectable 32:55.

Then, only a day later at the Chapin High meet, she astonished coach Kim Hendrix when she crossed the finish line before any of her teammates with a time of 26:13, over six-and-a-half minutes better than her time just 24 hours earlier — and faster than some of the Batesburg-Leesville BOYS racing that day!

Covington, the CiCi’s Pizza Batesburg-Leesville Girls Player of the Week, will be in action again next Wednesday when the Panthers host a dual meet against Keenan, Saluda and B-C.

Great job, Katie!
