Dreher junior Jay Washington is fourth in the Midlands with 589 yards rushing and is expected to be a huge factor in the Blue Devils’ (4-0) Friday showdown with unbeaten Gilbert (4-0) on Homecoming at the Indians’ field.
Washington’s prowess at running back is well-documented by those who followed the Blue Devils last season, but it’s his play at linebacker that also drew praise from Indians’ head coach Chad Leaphart on Wednesday.
“Jay is a difference-maker for them when he lines up at linebacker,” Leaphart said. “I just watched film of him against Calhoun County last week and, man, he is impressive when he gets to the ball. He was just- pow! – hitting guys at a whole different level than you see with most kids. He’s just a great football player.”
Washington, who was credited defensively with six solo tackles to go with his 128 yards rushing and two TD’s in last week’s win against the Saints, talked with MidlandsHighSchoolSports.com on Monday following the Blue Devils’ practice.
