Senior Emily Letts, the CiCi’s Pizza Ben Lippen Girls Player of the Week, won the 2016 SCISA 3A girls cross country championship meet by finishing an impressive 44.56 seconds ahead of runner-up Maryah Nasir of Heathwood Hall.

For Letts, it marked only the second time in some 50 cross country races that she had defeated Nasir, the Midlands top girls runner, and completed a steady 5-year progression to the top.

Beginning in 2012, as an eighth grader in her first season of cross country competition, Letts finished the SCISA championship meet in 61st place. She improved to 19th place as a freshman before earning All-State honors as a sophomore, finishing a strong fifth.

Then last year, Letts finished a close second to Nasir before claiming the crown in this, her senior season.

Letts will compete in the Foot Locker South Region Cross Country Championships in Charlotte’s McAlpine Park on Nov. 26.  The top 10 finishers earn a berth in the National Championships on Dec. 10 at San Diego’s famed Balboa Park.

Great job and good luck in Charlotte, Emily!
