Richland One hires Matz as A.D., Moore (Flora) and Bush (Columbia)

As we reported yesterday afternoon, the Richland One board confirmed LR’s Robert “Bob” Matz on Friday as the district’s new Athletic Director, effective immediately. Matz, 49, has spent the last three years as the A.D. at Lower Richland, while also serving as Dean of Students during this past school year. Before that, the Minnesota native was at Spring Valley for five years, excelling as an award-winning softball coach while also serving as an unpaid Assistant A.D. to Tim Hunter while at the school. Metz came to Spring Valley after a successful 7-year stint as both a coach and administrator at Marshalltown High School in Iowa, which came on the heels his first stint at LR, during which he served as a teacher and coach at the Hopkins school for twelve years. “I am excited as I can be about this opportunity,” Matz told us this evening. “As much as I love LR and the positive strides that we are making there, I feel that as District One A.D., I will…

Chick-fil-A Classic has reached elite status under Fulmer’s direction

The 13th edition of the Chick-fil-A Classic high school basketball tournament is in the books and what a tournament it was! Nationally-ranked players and teams were once again in the spotlight and several records were set, including the single game scoring record by Dreher’s Tevin Mack, whose 43 points in a 70-67 double overtime thriller over Hammond on opening night set the tone for the rest of the tournament. We sat down with tournament director Gary Fulmer for a look back at the 2014 edition of what has become one of the country’s elite holiday high school basketball classics.

2014 Chick-fil-A Tourney loaded with great teams and players

Chick-fil-A Classic Tournament Director Gary Fulmer, who is the Athletic Director at host Richland Northeast High School, is understandably excited about a 2014 lineup that includes a dynamic combination of great teams and individual talent. The tournament gets underway on Friday with Hillcrest of Simsonville facing Athens Christian (GA) at 6:30 PM in the auxiliary gym, while play in the main gym gets underway at 7:00 with a local match-up of Keenan and Lower Richland. The second game in the main gym, slated for an 8:30 start, is Hammond vs. Dreher. That game will feature Skyhawks junior guard Seventh Woods, rated as high as #15 nationally in the Class of ’16, going against a Blue Devils squad led by high-scoring VCU-commit Tevin Mack, a 6-7 forward. Play continues on Saturday with eight games, with the first tipping off at 2:30 PM. After an off day on Sunday, the tourney continues on Monday at 2:20 PM with a total of nine games scheduled between the two gyms. Championship Tuesday (Dec. 23)…
