Jon Wheeler, who resigned as Heathwood Hall’s head football coach in early March, has accepted an offer to be both Assistant Head Football Coach and Assistant Athletic Director at Hammond. Wheeler was the defensive coordinator for the Skyhawks when he was hired away by the Highlanders in 2011.
“I am beyond thrilled and thankful for the opportunity to return to Hammond School,” Wheeler told MidlandsHighSchoolSports.com. “I’m very close to so many people there and really excited to again be a part of the Skyhawk family. The success of the football team is due to more than just having an incredible head coach in Erik Kimrey. It’s the leadership, expectations and support that resonates throughout the school, the students and their families.
“I also want to thank Heathwood and (HH A.D.) Coach Whalen for the opportunity to lead the football program over the last four years. It was a great experience and I wish we could have won more games. The boys were absolutely great and their effort was always tremendous. Just a great group of young men both on and off the field.”
Especially enticing for Wheeler was the opportunity to get into the administrative side of athletics.
“The chance to work as assistant A.D. to Jeff Barnes is kind of a dream come true. It will allow me to learn from not only someone who does a fantastic job, but also a friend that I have worked with and won championships with before. I couldn’t ask for much more than that.”
Hammond’s Kimrey, whose Skyhawks won their seventh state championship in 9 years this past fall, is equally elated about having his former DC returning, this time as Assistant Head Coach.
“Jon Wheeler is one of the most talented and intelligent coaches I have ever been associated with,” Kimrey praised. “With his addition, our staff at Hammond is the finest I’ve been privileged to serve with.”
